The four best 3rd-place finishers from the just concluded Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers will meet in a mini playoff tournament this November in Morocco. Cameroon, DR Congo, Nigeria, and Gabon will battle for one last ticket to the intercontinental playoff stage.

The teams will face off in two one-off semifinals, with the winners advancing to the final. The champion will then proceed to the intercontinental playoff, joining five other teams from different continents in the final qualification round for the 2026 World Cup.
The first semifinal will feature Nigeria vs Gabon on November 13 followed later that evening by the second semifinal between Cameroon and DR Congo at the Stade El Barid. The winners of both matches will meet in the final on November 16.
Cameroon vs DR Congo: Historical Context
Cameroon and DR Congo share a deep football rivalry marked by physicality, passion, and national pride. Cameroon, one of Africa’s most successful football nations, has appeared in the World Cup eight times, with their most memorable run coming in 1990, when they reached the quarter-finals. The Indomitable Lions have also lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy five times, cementing their status as African giants.
DR Congo, formerly known as Zaire, also boasts a proud football history. The Leopards have appeared at the World Cup twice (in 1974 and 2018 as Zaire and DR Congo respectively) and have won the AFCON title twice, in 1968 and 1974. In recent years, the team has shown flashes of resurgence, blending experienced players with promising young talent emerging from European clubs.
Key Players to Watch
For Cameroon, Vincent Aboubakar remains a talismanic figure. The veteran forward has a knack for scoring crucial goals on the big stage. Alongside him, Brian Mbeumo, the Manchester United attacker, provides both goal threat and creativity in attack, essential for Cameroon’s fast-paced transitions.
For DR Congo, Cédric Bakambu leads the line with experience and composure. The former Olympiacos striker has been instrumental in the team’s recent qualifiers. Behind him, Gaël Kakuta adds flair and technical quality, capable of unlocking any defense with his vision and precise passing.
Predictions and Expectations
This encounter offers both sides a second chance after narrowly missing out on direct qualification in the first round. The match promises to be tightly contested — with Cameroon’s power and experience facing DR Congo’s resilience and tactical discipline.
While Cameroon holds a slight edge historically, DR Congo’s improved form and youthful energy make Cameroon vs DR Congo a tricky game to call. Factors such as player fitness, tactical decisions, and game-day composure will likely determine who advances although Cameroon will be seen as favorites going into the game.
Fans of both teams can expect a high-stakes showdown, filled with intensity, drama, and the dream of booking a final ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
