Kenya’s Junior Starlets began their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 3-0 defeat to China PR on Monday, October 19, in Rabat, Morocco. Despite a determined first-half effort, Kenya struggled to contain China after the break in their Group E opener.

Xu Yue Gives China the Lead

China took control early and opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Xu Yue finished calmly after a clever through ball from Fang Zhenzhu split the Kenyan defence.

The Junior Starlets worked hard to stay in the contest, with goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo producing important saves to prevent China from extending its advantage before half-time. Kenya showed resilience, but China’s movement and technical quality created persistent problems.

Xu Xiaotang Seals China’s Victory

The match turned decisively in the second half. In the 50th minute, Xu Xiaotang reacted quickest after Fang Zhenzhu’s long-range effort struck the crossbar, finishing the rebound to make it 2-0.

Just three minutes later, Xu scored again, heading home Fang’s inviting cross to complete her brace and put China firmly in control. Her performance earned her Player of the Match honours.

China’s tactical adjustments at half-time proved effective, while Kenya could not find a response to the quick double blow.

What Next for Kenya’s Junior Starlets?

The defeat leaves Kenya needing a strong response in their remaining Group E fixtures against the United States and Samoa. With the top two teams in each group and the four best third-placed sides advancing, Kenya still have an opportunity to fight for a place in the knockout rounds.

The Junior Starlets must improve their defensive organisation and take their chances in attack as they look to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
