Is Cristiano Ronaldo Obsessed with Reaching the 1000-goal Target?

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has shut down rumors that Cristiano Ronaldo's chase for 1,000 career goals has turned into an unhealthy obsession that could make the legend selfish on the pitch, especially by stopping passes to teammates.

In a fresh interview (March 2026), Martinez defended his talismanic captain, insisting Ronaldo remains a true team player even as he nears the historic milestone. With 965 competitive career goals (including 143 for Portugal and 22 this season at Al-Nassr), the 41-year-old is just 35 away from 1,000, but Martinez says the number doesn't dictate CR7's mindset.

"I don't agree with that," Martinez said about the "obsession" claims. He pointed to Ronaldo's selfless assist for Bruno Fernandes against Turkey in the Euros: "If Cristiano had played focused on scoring to break another record, that assist wouldn't have happened."

Martinez doubled down: "I don't see Cris playing with anxiety or intention of reaching 1,000 goals. Whether he has 950 or 1,050, he has the same legacy. That's outside talk." He praised Ronaldo's decision-making inside the box, noting assists often matter more than goals, and highlighted his maturity: "A striker isn't just about scoring, it's about the right decisions."

Despite an injury ruling him out of Portugal's latest squad (ahead of the 2026 World Cup), Martinez expects Ronaldo back for what could be his sixth World Cup finals. The GOAT is laser-focused on collective success, not just personal stats, proving his leadership and tactical discipline remain elite.

Ronaldo's pursuit of 1,000 goals continues to spark debate, but his Portugal boss insists it's no distraction. The king is still all about the team. 👑⚽
