Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi has made history by winning the 2025 CAF Men’s African Player of the Year, becoming the first defender in over five decades to claim Africa’s most prestigious individual football award.
A Trophy‑Laden Season
Hakimi’s rosy campaign with PSG in 2024–25 was a key factor behind his win. He played a central role in a historic season, helping his club lift the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and the UEFA Super Cup.
His attacking output was exceptional for a full‑back: over 3,400 minutes played across all competitions, roughly 10 clean sheets, plus double-digit goal contributions.

Breaking Long‑Standing Barriers
By winning the CAF award, Hakimi breaks two major historical barriers:
He becomes the first Moroccan to ever win the award since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.
He is the first defender in 52 years to win — the last was Bwanga Tshimen from Zaire in 1973.
National Team Impact
On the international stage, Hakimi also made a strong impression. He helped Morocco qualify for the 2026 World Cup, contributing assists that underscored his dual role as a defensive stalwart and offensive outlet. His leadership as captain further cemented his influence off the ball, helping his national team with crucial moments during the qualifying cycle.
What This Win Means
For defenders: As Achraf Hakimi Wins Men’s African Player of the Year, he challenges the narrative that only attacking players can win “Player of the Year” trophies.
For Moroccan football: It reinforces Morocco’s rising stature in African football growth in producing top talent capable of winning continental accolades.
For Hakimi’s legacy: This award adds to his already stellar career and positions him among Africa’s all-time greats, not just as a defender, but as a complete footballer.
