The race for Africa’s spots at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup intensified over the past weekend, as the final round of qualifiers kicked off with crucial first-leg encounters across the continent. With only four tickets available for Africa, every goal and result now carries massive weight.

Nigeria’s U20 side, widely known as the Falconets, made a strong opening statement with a 2–0 victory over Malawi in Ikenne. The West Africans showed their pedigree early, controlling possession and converting key chances to take a solid advantage into the second leg.

In another headline fixture, Cameroon hosted Tanzania in Yaoundé. The Central Africans lived up to expectations with an attacking display, securing a convincing 3–1 win and putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Zanzibar.

Ghana’s clash against Uganda in Accra proved to be one of the most competitive ties of the round. The Black Princesses relied on home support to edge a tight contest, though Uganda’s resilience means the tie remains finely balanced heading into the decisive second leg in Kampala.

Elsewhere, Côte d’Ivoire took on Benin in Abidjan and ended in a draw, completing a weekend of high-stakes fixtures that showcased the growing strength of women’s youth football across Africa. These matches mark the final hurdle, with the aggregate winners progressing to represent the continent at the global tournament in Poland later this year.

Overall, the first-leg results highlighted a mix of dominance and tightly contested battles. Traditional powerhouses like Nigeria and Cameroon have taken early control, while ties such as Ghana vs Uganda remain wide open. The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers final round 2nd leg matches are scheduled to take place between May 8–10, 2026. These decisive matches will determine the final representatives for the tournament in Poland.
