Amorim Sacked by Manchester United

On January 5, 2026, Manchester United sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, ending a turbulent tenure marked by on-field struggles and off-field tensions.

Amorim, appointed in November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag, initially brought hope with his success at Sporting CP. However, his time at Old Trafford proved challenging. He oversaw the club's worst-ever Premier League finish of 15th in the 2024-25 season and left them sixth midway through 2025-26, with only eight wins from 20 matches this campaign.

Why was Amorim Sacked?

Central issues included Amorim's rigid adherence to his preferred 3-4-3 formation, which drew criticism for not suiting the squad, and frustrations over transfer policy. A public outburst after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on January 4 escalated matters: Amorim insisted he joined as the "manager," not merely "head coach," demanded the recruitment team "do their job," and hinted at internal conflicts with director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada.

Who takes over after Amorim?

The club acted swiftly, stating the decision aimed to maximize chances of a higher league finish. Former midfielder Darren Fletcher, currently U18s coach, will take interim charge, starting with Wednesday's game at Burnley. A permanent replacement is expected in summer. Amorim departs having won 24 of 63 matches overall.
