The Football Association has come under heavy fire for handing Thomas Tuchel a contract extension until Euro 2028 , just months before the 2026 World Cup kicks off in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy didn’t hold back, branding the move “unnecessary” and “bizarre.” According to Murphy, the FA had a strong negotiating position and could have waited until after the tournament to secure Tuchel’s future. Instead, they’ve left themselves vulnerable to criticism if England underperform.
The German tactician, who took charge in January 2025 on an initial short-term deal, has now committed long-term. The FA’s stated reason? To fend off interest from big clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid while showing stability.
Murphy, while praising Tuchel as a quality manager unlikely to “fail miserably,” questioned the timing. He highlighted England’s technical shortcomings compared to Spain and South American sides, especially in hot conditions, and noted the lack of a clear successor to Harry Kane.
With the Three Lions preparing for friendlies and the summer’s global showpiece, many fans and pundits wonder: Was this a smart show of faith or a desperate PR move that could backfire spectacularly?
Only time , and results in the 2026 World Cup — will tell if the FA made the right call.
